Fine watercolour and gilt painting on paper depicting a meeting between the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II granting authority to Gennadius Scholarius, who became the first Greek Patriarch of Constantinople under Ottoman rule. This investiture took place in 1454 to stabilize the political situation and secure the loyalty of the Greek Christian population. That Patriarchate endured for nearly 500 years. There is a mosaic of this meeting in the reception hall of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul, Turkish, 20th century (?)
