Painting of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II and Greek Patriarch GennadiusScholarious

Fine watercolour and gilt painting on paper depicting Gennadius Scholarius (the first Greek Patriarch of Constantinople under Ottoman rule) taking "The patent/ warrant and Imperial decree of religious freedom" from  Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II.  This investiture took place in 1454 to stabilize the political situation and secure the loyalty of the Greek Christian population.
