Greenland Male and Female Masks by Jakob Amatangneq
Pair of male and female carved and incised wooden masks, the rectangular topknot indicating the female, the wood coloured with painted soot, the tongues and carved bone teeth inserted into the mouth. Carved by Jakob Amatangneq (B. 1900- D. 1973). Collected by J. Newall circa 1960 when he was travelling from the U.K. to Anchorage (then the most direct route) on his way to Soviet Union countries and North Korea as a "journalist". Greenland, 1960s
