Painting of Saint Ambrose Patron Saint of Beekeepers circa 1780-1820
St Ambrose painted on vellum and surrounded with fine silk embroidery, metal thread and ribbon embroidered on silk. He is often depicted with a beehive due to a legend that a swarm of bees settled on his infant face, which his father interpreted as a sign of his future eloquence and a "honeyed tongue". The red hat signifies his role as Bishop of Milan and a Doctor of the church. The book and writing materials highlight his significant contributions as a writer, theologian, and biblical critic who produced influential work. The halo above his head is composed of bees similar to the bees around the hive. Italian or French, circa 1780-1820
