Pair of Edo Period Japanese Dolls
The oldest style of hina dolls, representing the emperor and empress, made for the doll festival celebrated on 3 March. Carved wooden faces covered in gofun. Eyes carved into the gofun and painted, which is typical of dolls made before 1850. Costumes made of hand-woven silk brocades laid over a card body, missing silk hair, Japanese, early Edo period (1603-1868). Emperor 31cm long x 17cm wide. Empress 24cm long x 8 cm wide
