Pair of Antique Model Sandeel “Courge” Baskets
Pair of small finely crafted model courge (or creel) baskets used to keep sandeel (sand eel) alive for bait. The cylindrical body is made of handwoven willow basketry terminating at both ends with wooden plugs. The opening lids are made of wood with copper hinges. On boats fishermen would use larger versions of these models to contain the bait while allowing water to pass through the weaving when the basket was submerged. Sandeel is a good all around bait for a multitude of species. English, 19th century
